Gurley expresses support for naming of justice center after Senator Helms

RALEIGH (WTVD) — A Wake County commissioner would like officials to name Raleigh’s new justice center after the late Republican senator Jesse Helms.

The 500,000 square foot center isn’t slated to open until 2013, but controversy is already brewing over its name. At least one other member of the Republican-led board has expressed for naming the building after Helms, but not everyone is in agreement.

Tony Gets a Mention on Mike Beitler’s Free Markets

Tony had a great time visiting the Perquimans County GOP at the Indian Summer Festival earlier this year. Under the Dome: Harrison endorses Gurley for Lt. Gov.

The News & Observer’s political blog Under the Dome reported on Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison’s endorsement of Tony for Lt. Governor:

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison is backing Wake County Commissioner Tony Gurley, a Republican, in his campaign for Lt. Governor.

“Tony has always impressed me with his ability to meet the country’s funding needs – including those of our office – while lowering the tax burden on Wake County taxpayers,” Harrison said in a statement.

Statesville Record and Landmark: Lieutenant governor hopeful Tony Gurley makes pitch in Iredell

The Statesville Record and Landmark wrote about Tony’s recent visit to Iredell County:

Gurley said the 10 years on the Wake County Board of Commissioners, particularly his two different stints as chairman of that board, more than satisfy any training standards that may be sought of a qualified candidate.

“I know what it’s like to preside over important meetings and work sessions,” Gurley said and added that he has a great appreciation and admiration for North Carolina’s community college system.

“The best state money we spend is on our community colleges,” he said.

Gurley said he would use the seat as a kind of bully pulpit to promote small business in the state and to push for more transparency in state government.
